ecoPulse projects are underpinned by academic and scientific knowledge of the ecologies under investigation.

The only perception we know directly are our own. We guess at the perception of others from what they say they perceived, what they record, what they omit, how they behave.

George Seddon, Landscapes, 1997

Ecology

The study of interactions between living things and their environment, providing an understanding of their current state and how they might change over time.

Deep ecology

Deep ecology proposes human beings function as a part of the environment, not in opposition to it. Deep ecology has more in common with philosophy and political science than other branches of ecology. In the age of the Anthropocene, the rejection of an Anthropocentric view of the environment is still controversial. Nature for nature’s sake without attaching ‘value’ is still not a comfortable position for many.

Pulse

A strong and regular beat; rhythm – indicating health or movement.

Anthropocene

Describing the age of humans, the Working Group on the Anthropocene considers the Anthropocene epoch as having begun in 1950 – the start of the era of nuclear bomb tests, disposable plastics and the human population boom. The term was coined by Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer in 2000 to denote the present geological time interval, in which many conditions and processes on Earth are profoundly altered by human impact.
